How do I draw a solid rock

I need to draw a realistic 3D representation of a shot rock for stream restoration designs. The rock will need to be approximately 2'x1.5'x1' for the current project (other designs will require different sizes).

I have tried to draw a shape and extrude it (comes out too blocky) and I have tried to draw an outline and revolve it (comes out too much like a ball).

If I could get one, I could copy and scale to fit most designs.

Will the rock be rendered?

Hi RAMO,

What I would do is create as many varied shapes as I could think of and merge them together so that you end up with an irregular shape, then union them all together. Now you'll have a more realistic looking rock. Use copies of these shapes so that you may reuse them and create many different shapes and have a lot of different looking rocks.

Yes, I will need to render the rock.

Look in customer files. I uploaded some that came out of max. Don't know if
they will help.

Hi Jason,

I wouldn't want to be hiking in the hills with those rocks around. LOL! They're all jagged, nothing round anywhere.

Looks like they created them much like I would, but I'd use more round shapes than sharp ones. I think that would look more realistic too.

But maybe these are MARS rocks. LOL!

Thanks for your help. I took a look at those rocks and I need something a little more angular. The ones that I did before turned out to look more like brick... I need something between what I got and what up uploaded. I'm trying to piece some together like madcadd suggested....but it looks like my computer may not be able to handle it...it's getting really sloooow with just 2 faces completed.

If you are rendering, try attaching a material (try Marble-Pale) to it. Also
coping MARBPALE.TGA to the Bump Map will help make it more natural looking.
There is more you can done with it in max. AutoCAD is kind of limited.

Create closed splines
Extrude
Edit solid Intersection
Fillet
Attach material
Render this.

Way ugly JD, but better than Jasons sharp, jagged rocks.

The intention was to group the small rocks together to make one rock then
attach a material. Sorry I didn't explain it better (to close to lunch).
Here is an example and a render.

Wanna wender a wock?

A wock is what you fwow at a wabbit when you don't have a wifle to shoot it.

Thanks,

I finally got a rock that is close to what I want. It will work for now.

At least we posted possible solutions rather than suggest a tortuous method like you did.

Now there's a man with wocks! ;^o

madcadd: Exposed, weathered rock is often more round than jagged as are all rocks and boulders which have been subjected to actions of glacial movement.
